Lot 3755
1852-O $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Untoned. It is difficult to imagine that at the time this coin was issued it had $1 worth of value (1/20th of an ounce of gold). Today, at catalog time in late August 2010, with gold hovering above $1200 paper an ounce, just the melt value of the gold is 60 times what it was 158 years ago, or $60 paper. Add to that of course the collector premium for a coin minted at the storied New Orleans Mint and you get a surprising insight into America's monetary situation (PCGS # 7520) .
Estimated Value $425 - 450.

Lot 3756
1854 $1 Gold Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC Approved. Type 1. Well struck and mostly untoned. Aesthetically tempting, as fine a looking MS64 with full strike as you are apt to see, and all the while saturated with bright golden bloom, little in the way of toning. Something perhaps worth pausing to study is the fact that all devices were struck with the usual and desirable consistency of this year, that is, sharply by the dies, which then left behind bold elements of detail throughout. Last year of the truncated Liberty Head Type, which ran from 1849 to 1854 before the mint substituted the Indian Princess head of Liberty in 1854. Pop 168; 39 finer (PCGS # 7525) .
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,300.

Lot 3757
1855 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded AU-58. An untoned example with desirable mint frost in the devices and around legends. A few light surface features such as marks and one or two fine hairlines, but all in all a coin of some distinction. The date and denomination show better detail than most. Type 2 designs were featured in 1854-56 (PCGS # 7532) .
Estimated Value $500 - 550.
